I had not planned to read another book set in World War II Russia (I just finished Child 44), but this mystery thriller came highly recommended, and now I see why. Despite some very graphic and disturbing violence, the main characters are well developed and very charming young men. While it...

Funny, sad, and very readable. I'd like to read The 900 Days, which the author cites, to more fully understand the siege of Leningrad.

I'm about halfway through... reallly enjoying it. (Wait, "really" doesn't have three "l"s, right?)

this book is the story of a boy/young man in russia during ww2. he is caught looting a dead body and is going to be executed when fate steps in. if he can find eggs for the colonels daughters' wedding cake, he can go free. the problem is that their are no eggs in the whole city of petersburg so they have to cross the front lines to find some.
gruesome at parts, this book is not one to miss. to think of what people suffered during the war is unbelievable, the hunger alone would have driven me mad.

    read it!

If the winter conditions in and around Leningrad during the time of the Nazi noose can be at all humorous, well, then Benioff pulls it off. A unique coming of age story, as two doomed Russians try to find the batch of chicken eggs (as rare as diamonds) that will, hopefully, save their lives. Although the mission is a bit quirky, the story and its people are not: they are real, tragic, funny, sexy, wise, idiotic, and lucky. A touching ending.

Wonderful read, makes no excuses, holds no punches. However, the ending was slightly melodramatic (maybe he was just being American). Overall, 9.5/10

"How I Met Your Grandmother in a time when people ate each other's children and Nazi's shot off men's jaws." This book is very moving. That's really all I can say with words.
