I have only one complaint for this book: It ended.

In truth, the ending was also a little abrupt. I had hoped after following Isabel through her difficulties, I would also get to enjoy her victory at length. Still, Anderson concluded enough to give me a sense of resolution. Perhaps the...

I had to read this book for school. It was a very good "school book" however it was a little dry compared to the books I usually read. But, this was one of the best books about slaves or the Revolutionary War. If you have to read about about slavery, this is a great choice.

"Chains" is the best book I have read since "The Season". It is all about a little slave girl and her sister as the previous owner dies so they get sold off to new land. It really shows kind of how a slave would live and it is really sad. Not too sad to the point where you would cry a lot, just in like one spot and maybe another. You have to read it!

I read this for a book club book and once you get into it it's very good. It takes place during the revoloutionary war and is about a slave with a not so nice master.

Totally awesome. The character's so brave and even after parts that seem like there's no hope left and make you want to cry, there's light at the end of the tunnel. Probably my favorite part is when she finds out that her sister was never sold (sorry if I gave anything away, but I had to add that). And her owner Madam is the cruelest, most false person I think ever lived in New York. The thing that bothered me the most about her, besides the obvious of branding the main character and threatening to sell her sister, was that she even changed the main character's name from Isabel to Sal. Of course, the main character still thought of herself as Isabel, but it made me too mad for words that Madam didn't even think she was a person enough to own her own name!

Historical fiction at its very best from a talented author. I knew very little about slavery during the Revolutionary War and found Isabel's story fascinating. Her voice is authentic throughout the book and all the characters are complex and engaging. Anderson did a phenomenal job of weaving actual historic events and people into the plot -- all the more interesting because it takes place in New York City, so close to my home. My only complaint was that because a sequel is coming out later this year, the ending of Chains felt a bit abrupt and unfinished to me. If you liked Anderson's Fever 1793, you will love this one!
