In 1832, thirteen-year-old Charlotte Doyle is returning from her school in England to her family in America. She is taking a ship called the Seahawk home. The ship is controlled by a murderously cruel captain and is sailed by a mutinous crew. Charlotte finds herself caught between a bitter feud between captain and crew, and she ends up getting accused of murder where she is taken to trial and found guilty. Charlotte must clear her name to escape the consequences of the accusations.
