“Personally, I found the book to be slow reading. The opening was interesting and I found myself caring about Bod but became bored until Mr. Frost appeared. At that point the book became exciting again but, overall, I didn't think it was Newbery quality.”

The Graveyard Book is a delightful story of a young boy whose family is murdered (yes, I know I said "delightful story")when he is an infant and the historical grave site tenants (dead people) adopt him and take care of him. Nobody Owens, known as Bod, grows and cherishes his home as unique as it is. But, one day Jack, the murderer, comes back to find the boy. What is it that makes Bod so special that he is still hunted years later? Great characters in this story.”

How Mr. Gaiman keeps you guessing about that destiny and why his family was killed is only part of the magic of the book. The other part is the way he draws you in and makes you care about the little boy and his macabre "family" in the graveyard. Beyond that is the sheer literary skill with which the tale is told. I found myself almost shouting for joy after reading certain passages, surprised by the unusual combination of their power and lack of pretense.
The one minor flaw I found in the book was the tidiness of the circle drawn from the end back to the beginning. But after all, it's a children's book, even though the author is never, ever talking down to his audience. Recommended for anyone that can handle an innocent ghost story.”
“This is the 2009 Newbery Award winner. Young adult literature is my new favorite thing. Although the beginning is very, very dark, the book completely captivated me. The author was inspired by Kipling's Jungle Book. In The Graveyard Book, the jungle is replace by a graveyard, the animals are replaced by spirits. ”

I was a little weary about getting this, since its for younger children. But its really not. Its an awesome story for everyone. Gaiman is all over those pages with his hidden caves and scenery and humor. its fantastic. HIGHLY recommended”

I recommend this to everyone. It is, by far, my most favorite Gaiman book.”
“Very interesting and heartwarming book about a child raised by ghosts in the graveyard after his family is murdered. Well done.”

Read the first few pages and you will understand why it is not a book for young children. I was trying to keep an open mind while reading but I am not a fan of dark books. If you are thinking about putting this on the shelves in an elementary school read it before you do.”

Young Bod is delightful as he learns about life inside and outside of the graveyard that has become his home. The historical characters add a quirky take on growing up and growing old. A quick read that adults and kids alike will enjoy. ”
