Didn’t Like It“This book was a tremendous disappointment after the first, a bit like adding "midichlorians" to the original Star Wars saga. Glad I persevered to book 3, looking forward to book 4, but really, this one was not what I had hoped for.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“The Sharing Knife, volume two, Legacy (2007) 348 pages by Lois McMaster Bujold.
I bought volume one when it came out in paperback a couple of years ago. Since it said "volume one" on the cover, I decided to wait until I had all three [ha! on me, there's a fourth one coming.] So the irony is in this 4 week or so span that it's going to take my thumb to heal, fractured metacarpal, the hero of the story I'm reading has one arm. Personally I think it would have been nicer to have some young girl fall in love me than a broken hand, but where's the conflict resolution in that.
This book picks up right where volume one leaves off. Dag and Fawn leave West Blue and go to Hickory Lake. We are introduced to more of Dag's family. The Lakewalker culture is given added depth. There are enough plot elements to keep the story flowing. This may say more about my sense of humor than anything--Dag was explaining the lakewalker grown fruit (veg?), plunkin, to Fawn. "Some people say you could live forever on plunkin and water. Others say it would just seem like forever." I think I laughed for about 45 seconds after reading that line.
I think I'm giving away less than what's on the back cover, but I don't want to give away things from book one either, so I'll just say that I don't have enough superlatives to do justice to the book. ”
“Razi = love~!”

Most of this volume of the Sharing Knife series concerns the day-to-day life of a new couple settling in to a home they're not quite sure they're welcome in. For a series steeped in high magic, it reads more like engrossing fiction.”

While Bujold sets her story in an intriguing alternate universe, this book is about relationships. The significance and intimacy of those relationships would fall flat without reading the first book first. We learn the rules of this world not through narration, but through the characters interactions with it and more significantly, with each other. The vast curiosity of main character Fawn Bluefield leaves many natural openings for instructing the reader without being patronizing.
Legacy was better written and possibly closer to five stars than four. It follows a pair of newlyweds of differing cultures as they try sometimes successfully and more often unsuccessfully to bring their separate worlds into some kind of compromise life. Bujold writes her characters thoughts and actions in a very thoughtful way. No part of this story ever felt contrived, forced, or superfluous.
There is some slight explicit sexual content between the newly married couple, but it never felt offensive or gratuitous. Like Fawn, it came across very innocent, not salacious. It built the intimacy of the couple in a very natural way.
I read this book slowly, not because it was difficult or required heavy pondering, rather I found myself wanting to savor. I'm looking forward to reading book three.”
“This second book in The Sharing Knife Series was just as wonderful as the first and I can't wait to read the third and fourth books!! This book carries on the romance and love between Dag, that lanky hottie, and Fawn, his sweet, smart adoring farmer wife. There is also a supernatural element... or two... This was definitely a book I had a hard time putting down. LOVE IT!!!”

Still a good read, but with a plot that meanders a bit more and an ending that left me somewhat unsatisfied. Also, the female MC seemed more naiv and childlike than ever.”
