Bem legal.

I love the Robot Series pretty much as much as the Foundation Series.

The Caves of Steel takes place in the distant future on earth, and while there are a handful of plausible sci-fi elements in the story, including the famous Three Laws of Robotics, this is really a detective story at heart. R. Daneel Olivaw makes his debut here and plays a vital role as Detective Elijah Baley's sidekick.

It was written in the early 1950's, but it holds up fairly well if one can get past the "Donna Reed" dialogue that occasionally sticks out. This one was my favorite one, from Baley's son: "Aw, why the dickens do I have to go, anyway. I'm not going to bother them. Nuts!" Beyond a few of those, there isn't much that makes it feel dated.

I enjoyed reading this book, and I ceased reading everything else of mine until I finished it. It was a quick read, and it flowed like a good mystery should. I've read many of Asimov's robot short stories, as well as the Foundation series, and while this isn't favorite of the bunch, it is part of the Foundation timeline, and a fun story on its own. I'll be starting in on the sequel, The Naked Sun tonight before bed.

Asimov uses logic to create an entertaining and exciting murder mystery. I love it! Asimov's thinking is so mathematical, he sets up rules then finds ways to build upon them as well as bend them and test them. Genius!

An entertaining story, with plenty of food for thought worked into it, and a likable (if somewhat wooden) robot character.
