Reading each of Murakami's short stories is like waking up from a weird dream and going, "Huh?"

As this is a book of short stories, an overall rating doesn't exactly apply. I awarded Blind Willow Sleeping Woman 5 stars, because the stories within it range from good to amazing. Some I would give 3 stars out of 5, others I would give 7 stars out of 5 so I averaged the story ratings and gave the whole collection the averaged result. I began reading this book having not read short stories by Murakami before, and so I was slightly disappointed at the start of the collection as the first couple felt weak compared to his novels; regardless of this, they are followed by many absolutely incredible stories, brilliant characters and captivating moments.

Really hit or miss. Most of the longer pieces are strong.

This book contains 24 short stories written over many years. They range from the random to the very odd and almost mystical, but through all of them, the writing is beautiful. Each story drew me in and made me interested in the personalities involved.

I think my favorite is the very last story in the book, A Shinagawa Monkey. For some reason the idea that a monkey could steal a name tag and thus your name, and that the theft could then cause you to forget your name and lose parts of your personality struck me as an interesting concept.

Overall, I would say this is not necessarily the type of book I would normally choose to read, but the writing is beautiful. Some of the stories felt very disjointed, but the overall effect of the book was enjoyable.

Haruki Murakami is a god. These stories are awesome. Some will make you nauseous reading them, some will give you chills, make you sad, or just make you go "What the fuck?", but they're all amazing.

This book is my first sweet taste of many Haruki Murakami's delicacies. It broke my head wide open with full of mysteries. These short stories are filled with different frequencies and are really compulsive.

A wonderful collection of strange and beautiful stories from Murakami Haruki.
I enjoyed this more than Kafka on the Shore, though both books were lovely examples of Japanese literature.

I greatly enjoy Murakami’s writing style and found this collection of short stories particularly good. With brief, distinct narratives, this book is full of profound, touching, and compelling morsels. Occasionally his full- length novels have bogged down a bit for me but in this format I really connected to the stories. Some of the stories were deeply affecting and I would place this collection as one of the best books I read in 2008.

A very good collection of stories from the editing room floor going pretty far back. Fans can see some development in Murakami's style. A good intro for people new to Murakami, as well as some insight for longtime readers.
