Deep insight to what led up to WW11. If you like peace between nations this will give fresh perspective.

An anti-war book. Proceeds with a collection of short, newspaper like pieces to show the development of war fever fuelled by hatred on both sides. Focuses to a great degree of the British program of indiscriminate bombing of German cities and on the increasingly violent German attitudes to the Jewish population. The idea of deporting Jews becomes transmuted into a program of killing Jews.

    The Literary Hammer Review:
    "Human Smoke" (2008, 474 pgs.)

By far one of the greatest histories I have ever read! Baker's book is fantastic, and unique in it's running narrative of short historical excerpts which lead the reader through the days leading up to WW II, into the war and through the other side. This book (and its unique narrative format) is illustrative of how and why mankind prepares for war. It presents a wide array of perspectives and philosophies, but no good reason for why we fail to learn from our mistakes.

From major historical figures like Churchill and Ghandi, to lesser-known newspaper reporters and congressmen, Baker's book is inclusive of a wide variety of observational points of view. The book will grab, and hold, your attention. I cannot recommend "Human Smoke" highly enough. It is a truly outstanding work of non-fiction.

This is a collection of snippets that tell the story of the war, the personalities of the players, and the behind the scenes machinations across the world. A brilliant argument against the war by its main protagonists.
