Well - though there were some redeeming parts, this coming-of-age story of family and friendship just didn't have what it takes. I had to force myself to finish the story and Mitch and Spencer were not the kind of characters you found yourself rooting for or even hating. I'd pass on this one.

Mitch's father has deserted the family, so he and his mom go to live at his grandparents’ house at Bird Lake. Wanting a home of his own, he begins to hang around a deserted cottage. Soon Spencer and his family show up. Mitch sees the new boy as living in the perfect family and is jealous, but they are haunted by the drowning of their oldest child many years ago in the lake. Nice story about loss, friendship and healing.

Spencer's parents are getting a divorce. Mitch's family is visiting their family home after being away for year's due to his brother's death in the lake. The two meet and grow through their summer experiences. There is not much character depth in this story.

Kevin Henkes is the best. This story of two young boys, each with his own set of problems is well written. Mitch and Spencer become friends at Bird Moon Lake, a friendship that is solidified when they share their secrets about their families. It exemplifies the whole a burden shared is a burden lightened.Good read for the older elementary grades.
