Never a dull moment in this thriller steeped in the atmosphere of the Shetland Islands. Ethical questions posed about late-term abortions would make this a good candidate for book discussion groups. Hard to believe this is the author's first novel.

Good mystery but the character seems a little too hard-headed and doesn't trust herself enough. The average reader will figure this out, but its intriguing to watch the characters wrestle with the conclusion... Nice body in the Peat mystery!

Took me a while to get started, but it turned out quite interesting.

A bone chilling, spellbinding debut novel set on a remote Shetland island where surgeon Tora Hamilton makes the gruesome discovery, deep in peat soil, of the body of a young woman, her heart brutally torn out.

Excellnt suspense; good description of the Shetlands. I loved the style, I enjoyed the author's knowledge of so many diverse subjects.

When Tora Hamilton discovers a body buried on her property, officials initially write it off as another of the famed bog bodies -- the body of someone long dead and out of their jurisdiction. The body is discovered to be that of a woman dead only a couple of years, though. Tora is warned against getting involved, but she finds herself feeling somewhat responsible for unraveling the the dead woman's story. What she discovers leads her to a chilling and dark secret that has remained hidden until now.

Great debut! The use of British folk legend in combination with a thrilling plot works fantastically. I love this type of story!

I really enjoyed this, although it did get a little "out there" at times. It was like a scottish version of Patricia Cornwell novels. Main character is a female doctor in Scotland, who is constantly running - and runs into a few difficulties with the law of small town in Northern Scotland. Well worth the read.

I wanted so much to love this book. It started out slow, but very interesting.... I loved the tie in with the Scottish folklore. By the last quarter of the book, I just wanted it to end. The ending was unsatisfying, and the action sequences leading up to it were ludicrous.

I don't want to get too deep into the book itself because the books description already tells all the main plotlines minus a few very exciting ones.
For the reader who likes to not only read mysteries settled in the U. S. [span style="font-style:italic;"]Sacrifice[/span] is an exciting and suspenseful must read with a lot of myths beautifully bound into the plot.
With its twist and turns the reader never quite figures who's the villain and how much people are really involved in the one dead body Tora discovers. It might be a whole hospital or just a few, the whole island or just a particular group of men and knowing women.
The plot is complex and can only be recommended.

    S. j. Bolton will publish her second book available in the U. S. in May 2009 and. Its title is [a href="http://www.amazon.com/Awakening-S-J-Bolton/dp/031238114X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235010436&sr=1-2" target="_blank"][span style="font-style:italic;"]Awakening[/span][/a].

I loved this first novel - I was drawn to it as I have visited the Shetland Islands and spent time in Lerwick the site of this scary, creepy plot, part forensic, part medical folkloric thriller (one of my favorite themes) It did not disappoint.
