Not what I was looking for

I am starting a forum and needed something to talk me through start to finish. If that is what you want this is not the book for you. I guess I should have read more about what it was about before ordering. It seems to be geared more to the person that knows how to operate a forum but wishes to do so more efficiently.

A Must for Anyone Managing Any Type of Online Community

O'Keefe's book is a must for anyone wishing to run online communities, but especially online forums. A more apt title would be "The Community Manager's Bible."

"Managing Online Forums" offers practical advice for managing online communities, dealing with various personalities, spam, legal issues and so much more. Two great big thumbs up.

The Bible for Forum Owners and Managers~

Patrick has written a guide that is misleadingly simple to read, follow, and understand. I qualify the "misleading" designation with the fact that someone new to online communities would assume that his assertions are logical and common sense. They are anything but logical and common sense, they are the wisdom that only comes from experience. As the owner of several very large forums and then as the CEO of a company that buys and believes in forums, I broke into a broad grin while reading this book. I could tell immediately that this was not written by some social media weenie, but by a person who had gotten his ass kicked by the weird subculture of the forum underworld and lived to tell about it. He does not indulge in semantic expositions on forum dramas and toxic personalities, but instead tells you what to do based upon what works. What more could anyone ask for in a guide book? His book is required reading for our staff and consultants and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The 'Strunk and White' for Online Forums

'Managing Online Forums' is a reference book for all online community professionals, regardless of experience. The principles from the early days of the web to now haven't changed much and Patrick understands and expresses those principles throughout his book. As someone who's been in this business since before it was a business, I can attest that I still refer to this book when writing, researching, consulting or training. It's one of the few community books I own with the yellow highlighting, dog-earred pages and lots of ink in the margins.

Belongs on any Community Manager's Bookshelf

Managing Online Forum's is a comprehensive guide to planning, building, staffing and engaging with a forums-based community. Although written primarily for those who want to start online communities based on forum software, the advice, examples and templates are applicable to most online community circumstances.

Patrick includes real world examples from his iFroggy network of sites, including what worked and what didn't. Particularly helpful are the chapters on Promoting Your Community, Managing Staff, and Banning Users and Dealing With Chaos.

Aspiring community builders and managers should read this book, and seasoned pros should have a copy on their community bookshelf.
