WHAT IF FOLLOWING HER HEART MEANS ROSE COULD LOSE HER BEST FRIEND FOREVER?

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with an unbreakable bond to the earth's magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest and most dangerous vampires--the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend, makes her a Dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making her one of them.

Rose knows it is forbidden to love another guardian. Her best friend, Lissa -- the last Dragomir princess -- must always come first. Unfortunately, when it comes to gorgeous Dimitri Belikov, some rules are meant to be broken ...

Then a strange darkness begins to grow in Rose's mind, and ghostly shadows warn of a terrible evil drawing nearer to the Academy's iron gates. The immortal undead are closing in, and they want vengeance for the lives Rose has stolen. In a heart-stopping battle to rival her worst nightmares, Rose will have to choose between life, love, and the two people who matter most ... but will her choice mean that only one can survive?

Quotes edit see section history

  • “You will lose what you value most, so treasure it while you can.”
    Rhonda
  • “He stepped back and threw his arms out."I'm always crazy around you Rose. Here, I'm going to write an impromptu poem for you."He tipped his head back and shouted to the sky:"Rose is in red But never in blue Sharp as a thorn Fights like one too."”
    Adrian Ivashkov
  • “"Yeah. We were badasses."”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “"It's okay," I said soothingly. "You're just getting your stride back. Once you're up to full power, I'll go crack a rib or something so we can test it."She groaned. "The horrible part is that I don't think you're joking."”
    Rose and Lissa
  • “What's up?" I asked. "You tell me," he said. "You were the one about ready to start making out with Adrian." "It was an experiment," I said. "It was part of my therapy." "What the hell kind of therapy are you in?"”
    Rose and Christian Ozera
  • “"If you want some advice--which I'm sure you don't--you guys should lay off on the magic. Christian still thinks you're moving in on Lissa." "What?" he asked in mock astonishment. "Doesn't he know my heart belongs to you?" "It does not. And no, he's still worried about it, despite what I've told him." "You know, I bet if we started making out right now, it would make him feel better." "If you touch me," I said pleasantly, "I'll provide you with the opportunity to see if you can heal yourself. Then we'd see how badass you really are."”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Adrian Ivashkov
  • “"Even I make mistakes." I put on my brash, overconfident face. "I know it's hard to believe--kind of surprises me myself--but I guess it has to happen. It's probably some kind of karmic way to balance out the universe. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair to have one person so full of awesomeness."”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “He sighed and then focused his eyes right on me. It was like drowning, drowning in seas of green. There was nothing in the world except for those eyes. "I want to kiss you, Rose," he said softly. "And I want you to want me too."”
    Adrian Ivashkov
  • “Don't worry, little dhampir. You might be surrounded by clouds, but you'll always be like sunshine to me.”
    Adrian Ivashkov
  • “"Vladimir did great things--so could she. Besides, they come first, right?" "Not always." I stared. I'd had they come first drilled into me since I was a child. It was what all guardians believed. Only the dhampirs who'd run away from their duty didn't subscribe to that. What he said was almost like treason. "Sometimes, Rose, you have to know when to put yourself first."”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Dimitri Belikov
  • “"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you just defended Christian's honor. Isn't he a pain in the ass? Yes he is. But for the next 6 weeks he's MY pain in the ass. "”
    Eddie Castile; Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “The three cards were the Moon, the Empress, and the Ace of Cups. Ambrose leaned over my shoulder to peer at the cards. 'Ooh,' he said. 'Very interesting.' Rhonda glanced up at him. 'Hush. You don't know what you're talking about.'”
    Ambrose & Rhonda
  • “"Maybe you don't need beauty sleep, but some of us aren't so lucky."”
    Christian Ozera
  • “"What other stories?” About how you and Adrian Ivashkov are-“ No, whatever you heard it’s not true.” But it was really romantic” Then it’s definitely not true!””
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Jillian
  • “"You aren't afraid of throwing yourself in the path of danger, but you're terrified of letting anyone in."”
    Dimitri Belikov
  • “"Your a dhampir," I breathed "So are you," he teased "Yeah but i just thought--" "That i was human? Because of the bite marks?" Yeah"i admitted,No point in lying We all have to survive," he said "And dhamphirs are good at figuring ways out to"”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Ambrose
  • “"And besides, you don't hang out with him 24/7." "Neither will you. It's only 24/6." "Same difference. It might as well be 24/10." She frowned. "That doesn't make any sense."”
Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir

  • I called a warning to Christian, just as a Strigoi grabbed him. But Christian was fast. Flames wreathed the Strigoi’s head. He screamed and released Christian, trying frantically to put the flames out. The Strigoi never saw me coming with the stake. The whole thing took under a minute. Christian and I exchanged looks. Yeah. We were badasses.

I have a feeling we’re on the verge of hugging and coming up with cute nicknames for each other.” He was trying to look disgusted at my sentiment, but I could tell he liked being told that Lissa cared about him. “I already have a nickname for you, but I’ll get in trouble if I say it in class.” “Ah,” he said happily. “That’s the Rose I know.”

Glossary edit see section history

  • Moroi: Vampires. These are born, not made. There are royal Moroi who lead the vampires. Though they do have heightened senses and ability to control limited magic, they are sensitive to the sunlight and are not known to be typically strong. They are protected by the dhampirs.
  • Dhampir: Half-human, half-vampire. Dhampirs get the better traits of the two races, better senses and endurance, plus tolerance to sunlight. Most train as guardians to protect the Moroi.
  • Strigoi: Evil, soulless vampires. These vampires are made. Whether the new Strigoi had been a dhampir, moroi, or even human, they can be turned by either 1) (Moroi) killing while feeding, or 2) exchanged blood with a Strigoi. Moroi blood is the most strengthening to them, so the dhampirs are forced to protect the Moroi against the Strigoi.

"Yes. I mean, are you are you trying to spy on me? ..."
(pg. 133 - repeated wording)

"The last time Lissa had seen the queen, Tatiana had snubbed her and embarrassed her in front of the school for having running away with me."
(pg. 150 - " ... having running ..." doesn't make sense.)

"Glancing behind me , I saw that Christian was sitting up and alert. His eyes were on Lissa and Adrian, and he did not look happy about the victory hug. Lissa and Christian had broken apart, though not because they'd noticed his reaction." (pg. 268 - Actually it was Lissa and Adrian who had broken apart, not Christian. Christian was the one with the reaction.)

"Giving advice was a lot harder than following it."
(pg. 304 - Giving advice it actually a lot easier, not harder, than following it.)

"Let's finish this before the sun comes up."
(pg. 410 - It's suppose to say: " .. before the sun comes down." since they are already fighting during the day and are suppose to be worried about the night.)
