I didn't know the story of these real lovers from the 12th century, other than having heard the names. These translations of actual letters were interesting, as was their tragic story. It was not an easy read, though, because of the structure and style of the writing of that period. The letter I had the hardest time getting through was Abelard's discussion of the rules for the convent. Long and tedious at times, it was also interesting. This is not a book I would recommend to most people, but I am really glad I read it. I have found myself thinking about them a lot, so I think that is a sign that it was a good read.

Great book. Not for everyone. You have to love history and realize the importance of the book. Letters about love and God. Not for everyone, but if you can read it you should.

This book was required reading for a history class that I took in college. I just remember getting angry at both Abelard and Heloise for their stupidity. I also remember being grateful that I'm a 21st century woman and not a woman of the Middle Ages.
