Excellent - Deborah's writing gets better and stronger with each new novel. Loved it.

Excellent book. Very well written. One of my favorite types of novels, a mystery set in London with World War II ties. The mystery is revealed in a very thoughtful, slow, well planned manner.

I expected a quaint little English mystery novel and got so much more. There is a depth to this mystery that was unexpected and although it is part of a series concerning Gemma and Duncan they and their lives take a back seat to the "real" story being told. Very well written and I will definitely be reading more Deborah Crombie!

My first and probably last book by this author. The basic premise was sound, an elderly German Jew finding links to her past in modern day London. However the execution was muddled and further spoiled by elementary mis-pronunciations in the audio book version eg: Balliol College Oxford and the police acronym SOCO, hilariously delivered as 'Bally-all' and 'sew-coe' respectively. The worst offence was the repeated howler of pronouncing the main surname Rosenthal as rosen-thawl!

Attempts at character development resulted mostly in hackneyed stereotypes. The F-bomb was dropped suddenly and gratuitously to establish the credentials of a rock guitarist, gratingly out of place with the rest of the prose.

I found the story slower to start than a 1960s Ford and meandered all over the show until the author had settled on its direction. Too many peripheral characters appeared, muddying the waters and not progressing the tale. Overall a disappointing story spoiled by lame narration.

Another really good Duncan Kincaid mystery.

I wasn't sure about liking this one at first. It jumped from character to character and one timeframe to another at the beginning, but once I settled in and was able to listen (this was an audiobook that I began in distracting traffic in my car) I really enjoyed all of the characters and especially the plot. The first murder takes place after WWII and remains unsolved to present day. Then a series of events take place that show James and Kincaid that the current day murders are somehow tied up with WWII Jewish refugees, a stolen brooch and long kept secrets. This was well written and I enjoyed the historical aspects of the plot.

Well plotted, the novel moves smoothly back and forth between investigation of a modern crime and flashbacks to the roots of that crime in the period surrounding World War I. Crombie's period detail is always admirable, and this is no exception
