Liked It“A long book (311 pages) but a great story of a "geeky" guy with few friends and an obsession with comic books and graphic novels. In fact, he is writing his own graphic novel that he is determined to sow to his favorite author at a comic book convention. His parents are divorced, he hardly sees...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It1 of 1 members found this review helpful“There are few words for the awful book. IT SUCKED!It was suicidal! The main character carries around a bullet as a "security blanket" sort of thing. Then there is this emo girl who is emo, and there isnt an ending! It is like driving on a bumpy road for 2 hours, only to realize you have been...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Obsessive comic-book reading brainiac suburban outcast meets emotionally unstable outcast goth girl. I guess this was pretty well-written and characters' self-absorbed baby-ness rings true. I just didn't care for some reason?

“It was very different, and interesting.”

In fact, he is writing his own graphic novel that he is determined to sow to his favorite author at a comic book convention. His parents are divorced, he hardly sees his father, his mother is remarried (to the Step-Fascist) and pregnant, his best friend only talks to him when no one else is around, and he is constantly picked on, pushed around and punched by bullies. (And of course, no teacher EVER sees what's really going on.) So when he is IM-ed my a stranger who has pictures of the PE bully punching him, he is intrigued. Lot so relationships for Donnie to work out! Good for a reluctant, but higher level reader. A "dude" book, but I think girls would find it interesting too.”

Barry Lyga is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. His work is fantastic. He can be a little too descriptive, but given his previous 10 year career in comics, it makes sense that he tries to make up for the lack of pictures.”
“I got a little over half way and then abandoned this one. If I enjoyed comics I might like it better. I thought this was the authors way to name drop and show how much he knows about comics. I do kinda want to know what happens to the chick, but my guess would be that she tries to kill herself and the dude stops it. ”

If I liked comics then maybe I would like it, but I don't. I felt like the author was talking over my head the whole time. I also had the feeling like I don't really care what happens in this story?”
