Liked It“I pick the book up in a bookstore solely because I like the book’s name (“Umbrella Academy?”). The story makes about as much sense as the name. It makes sense in its own way even if it can be a bit surreal sometimes. What is it, is a quirky title with a lot of details (many of which doesn’t have...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“I really wanted to like this. The basic plot line is excellent: 7 children born miraculously to women showing no signs of pregnancy are adopted by the mysterious Reginald Hargreeves aka The Monocle, and brought up in his Umbrella Academy, trained to save the world (from what? they're not sure...” see full review » see other reviews » |

It makes sense in its own way even if it can be a bit surreal sometimes. What is it, is a quirky title with a lot of details (many of which doesn’t have any explanation until the later book), unexpected twists, interesting dialogues, neat art that works amazingly well with the story.

“I know this was an Eisner Award winner, but frankly the angst wore thin for me. Yeah, your life sucks. Now move on and do something with yourself.”

The characters weren't well developed, and the story suffered. The art is amazing, and the extras in the back are worth reading. ”

The basic plot line is excellent: 7 children born miraculously to women showing no signs of pregnancy are adopted by the mysterious Reginald Hargreeves aka The Monocle, and brought up in his Umbrella Academy, trained to save the world (from what? they're not sure yet). The children are special indeed--one's a time traveler, another has the ability to contact the dead, etc. Despite the art and characters being reminiscent of Mike Mignola's work (my opinion, meant as a compliment), I think the book falls pretty flat due to lack of background. There are relationships between the characters you're supposed to understand, althought they're never explained to you. And each of the children/members of the Umbrella Academy has 3 names or titles they are referred to, which was confusing. Overall the book just got old real quick to me, and I only finished it to see what happens, not because I was genuinely interested.”

A group of children with super powers go to a school for superheroes and then grow up. One goes bad and the rest half to defeat her.
I loved the chimp and im still sad that he was killed.”
“This was the first graphic novel I've read, so I don't really have anything to compare it to. But I must say, I was not disappointed.”

I first got into it when I heard that it was writtn by my favorite band's singer, Gerard Way. this novel is about 7 children that are rejected, and then taken in by a professor. The kids were actually superheros. One was very strong, one time traveled, one had tenticles, one had the power of flotation, one had the power to make someone belive something, one was very mean and strong, and one had no superpower. Their life becomes tragic, and they split up. They reunite when the professor dies. Everyone is not surprised when they see eachother. The one that has no superpowers goes away from the group and joins a murderous orchestra. She then is transformed into " The White Violin." She is on the cover of the book. It is a very interesting and somewhat disturbing graphic novel.”
