They say Bethany Hamilton has saltwater in her veins. How else could one explain the passion that drives her to surf? How else could one explain that nothing -- not even the loss of her arm -- could come between her and the waves? That Halloween morning in Kauai, Hawaii, Bethany responded to... read more

The thing came out of the blue literally. I had no warning the shark was coming. I was born to surf and this attack did not pull me away from what I do best, surfing. Halloween morning Kauai, Hawaii my mom wakes me up and says, “Do you want to go surf? We take the blue crush (our old worn out van) all around Kauai looking for a surf spot and finally stop at tunnels beach and see that the Blanchard’s are also there. Alana Blanchard is my best friend. My mom drops me off with them and drives home. Alana and I paddle out and wait at a sandbar. We are distracted and aren’t paying attention, so we don’t see the shark coming. Normally when you see a fin it is a shark but we didn’t look at the water, we were too busy talking. I don’t remember much of the attack mostly just seeing the water around me turn red and hearing screams from Alana. I also remember feeling really sharp pain. Holt (Alana’s dad) paddles out to get me once he realized what happened. I can’t remember much because I had lost so much blood that I didn’t cry or scream, I practically passed out! Holt finally reaches my board and paddles me in, we get in and he rips off his rip curl rash guard a wraps it around my arm. Thankfully there was a doctor on the beach and he took care of me until the ambulance came. I was rushed to the hospital. The weird thing is my dad was having surgery at the hospital and I had to use his room. My mom came and so did my brother Timmy and his friend Sarah hill. I was still thinking, “I will live, have faith, god bless me” and other things. I also remember thinking critical things such as, “What will happen next, I’ll never be able to surf again, will I die?” if something horrible happens to me I try to think about surfing but this time I tried not to. It was really a miracle that the shark didn’t come back for more and that I got to the hospital so quick. The lord blessed me with my life and still being able to surf. After I got out of the hospital I told my parents I want to surf again. They thought I was crazy at first and then we talked it over and decided I’d learn all over again. It was horrible I got cuts bruises and even scars from surfing or trying to with one arm. It was like learning my ABC’s again but worse. I was learning on a long board so it’s easier. And I would move down a size until I was on a 4 ft. board. It was ALMOST IMPOSIBLE but not quite. I succeeded and look where I’m now, a pro surfer with one arm. you may think something is impossible but (I might sound like an old wise man) Luke 2:52 states, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Ellen Walters  (I= Bethany Hamilton)

And honestly, that’s almost anything. The only thing that will never go away, that will never fail you, is your faith in God."”

  • I think part of growing up is finding your faith. It’s faith in God, faith in yourself, faith that everyone has a gift, a talent, and a purpose. God wants you to pursue your gift to the fullest of your ability. That’s doing His work. And if you’re not quite sure what that gift is, then have faith it will come to you when you’re ready to accept it.
