“This is an inspiring true story about a girl named Bethany who loses her arm while surfing with friends. She goes into shock and her life is never the same. She has so much love and support from family and friends and its very encouraging. She has a long road ahead of her but she is determined to never give up. She eventually begins to surf again but it is harder then ever because she has to completely relearn how to do it. She competes in a competition and comes very close to winning.
I give this book 4 stars because it really is a beautiful story. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I had a hard time staying into the story. I would read it and then not be interesting in reading it anymore for a few days. That could be because I had seen the movie first. But other than that, its an inspirational story that should move anyone who reads it.
I would recommend this to my students who are struggling to accomplish their dreams and who could use some true story encouragement. ”

“Inspiring auto-biography of Bethany Hamilton. Appropriate for grades 6-8.
Bethany Hamilton is a female surfer from Kauai, Hawaii. She spent most of her time in the water, as she was working toward becoming a professional surfer. Everything changed one Halloween morning; a 16 foot tiger shark attacked her and took off her left arm. This book follows Bethany's recovery and desire to get back to what she loves most - surfing.
Teachers, empowering read. Exceptional read to incorporate in a unit about overcoming obstacles, or showing courage in the face of tragedy.”
“Soul Surfer is the amazing story of Bethany Hamilton, a competitive teenage surfer, who was attacked by a shark and lost her entire left arm. She has to learn all over again how to surf because everything is drastically different after the shark attack. This book references God because Bethany has faith in God and that's how she gets back into surfing, so I wouldn't recommend this book to my students just because I wouldn't want to offend parents, but this is a wonderful autobiography about a teenage girl who doesn't lose hope. This book is for students in middle school. ”Kristen B wrote this review Sunday, November 17, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This book is a intermediate/middle school age appropriate biography about Bethany Hamilton, whose arm was bitten off by a shark. Bethany grew up surfing, and didn't expect that a shark attack could happen to her. However, the scars healed and and she went back out on her surf board. Tip: Keep this book in your classroom library so students can learn about courage and perseverance.”Bethany Ternes wrote this review Friday, November 15, 2013. “This book was alright, not my best catch but it wasn't the worst book ever. I did read it a while ago so my memory of it as a whole is a bit blurry, but it was interesting, but it was a non fiction so the movie spoiled the whole thing. The book also didn't help my phobia of sharks... :/”marinapblue wrote this review Tuesday, October 29, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
