Didn’t Like It“Dan Simmons totally missies the concept of Druga and Kali in this book. |
“A good Simmons book. Much shorter than some of his others at a little under 300 pages. Characters not as intimately described. Not as solid as The Terror in my mind, but then it really is a totally different type of book. No history in this fiction except for a little background on Calcutta and some strange, somewhat erotic supernatural elements. Still, if you're a Simmons fan (which I am) you must at least check it out. KInd of put me in the mind of one of the old, classic Night Stalker episodes. Kind of creepy, but fun.”

The story takes you on a trip to India and all its wonders on a search for a famous poet which leads to danger and discovery of sorts. Enjoy!”

I love the fact that Mr Simmons isn't afraid to shy away from in depth description, kicking it old school. I'm a description whore, I'm afraid; and he successfully immerses the reader into the complete and utter mess that is 1970's Calcutta. It's really gross, actually. And, whilst the fear isn't spurred on so much by Sadako ghosts and Ravana demons, what happens to the main character is truly horrific, and it's realistic, and I'm afraid I fully believe in the possibilities of the supernatural, so I was disturbed.
Yes, bring on more Mr Simmons!”
“a good (scary) story but there was no conclusion! you keep reading feeling that the story is going somewhere and that you will get answers (why did this happened? who was that person? and why did they do what they did?)..NOTHING, doesn't make sense!”

The book was recommended to me by a friend and I was very pleasantly surprised as I knew nothing of the plot. The novel is heavy on the exposition; however, I was completely captivated throughout the entire story. I would consider Song of Kali as more of a thriller than horror but it is an excellent read nonetheless.”

I wish more of his work were in print, although I know he has a streak of new novels.”
