Anybody else out there see the tension between the best science and technology could provide for the crew and the simple, and misunderstood, spirituality of the Eskimo woman? This was an inescapable juxtaposition for me throughout. Simmons sending a message?

I like this book, and there's a lot going on other than just plot, but I'm totally frustrated with what seems like the author's attempt to maximize his word count. I remember hearing somewhere that Dickens got paid by the word with "David Copperfield." That's whats comes to mind with "The Terror." Sometimes Simmons says something like "the not quite elderly but not young ship's steward" instead of just using the character's name. 600 pages in, I know the character's goddamn name.

Interesting story and wonderfully accurate portrayal of arctic exploration in the 1840s. Nonetheless, I found it overlong and periodically got a bit bored when the level of detail became too fine; e.g., accounts of every item brought along on each leg of the various travels. Zzzzzzz!

More Dan Simmons - that's easy.

    If you like sci-fi, try:
    - Hyperion
    - Fall of Hyperion
    - Endymion
    - Rise of Endymion

It's a set, but you can read them in twos. There's also:
    - Ilium
    - Olympos
    Horror fiction:
    - A Winter Haunting
    - Carrion Comfort
    Short Stories:
    - Prayers to Broken Stones
    - Worlds Enough And Time
The last one includes a story that takes place in the universe of "Endymion" and "Rise of Endymion"

Dan Simmons in one of the few authors who's books I pick up and read without even wondering what the book is about.

BTW, there's a new book coming of his called "Drood" - historical fiction again. Check out the details at http://www.dansimmons.com/news/news_items.htm#drood

I totally love this book. Have yet to finish it, about 3/4 of the way through. But I have a question for other readers - can anyone recommend more of Dan Simmons writing? I would like to try something else by him, and he is obviously a prolific writer.

I found this book for the most part to be incredibly boring but also found myself unable to put it down! By the end, I decided that I had thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the ending.
