Indians are mad at the English because of unfair treaties and such. They are attacking people and capturing some. Catherine and many others are scared. Catherine's papa is sad for Indians that are being attacked by the English. Soon, Catherine and her brother, Thomas, are captured by Indians. Catherine thinks that they will torture them. Her brother is taken away from her and she thinks that he is dead. Soon, she finds out that one of the Indians was captured, too, and now you can't tell that he was English. He still speaks English and tells her that her brother is okay and that they are replacing kids that had died of measles. They aren't supposed to go home. Catherine and Thomas learn the ways of the Indians but Catherine is still wondering, will they ever go home?
