As with all Yates' works I find myself screaming at the characters and wondering why anyone cares about them...But then I can't stop thinking about them as if I know them. As if things might have been different for them some how. And amusingly with only minimal modifications such as a brother and a sisters instead of two sisters, this is almost a parody of Yates' own life. Try Blake Bailey's Tragic Honesty for the details.

Yeah, this book was sad, really sad. The Yates books I've read (Revolutionary Road, A Special Providence, Easter Parade) are like maps of sadness and regret that hopefully readers, like me, use to guide themselves away from these sad lives. A book that very much made me think about the, "uh oh, wait a minute, life is flying by, what am I doing?" self awareness that I sometimes pretend to not have time to sit down and consider. Bring a hanky.

One of the most profoundly sad books I've ever read. Sad in the old fashioned sense of the word. Richard Yates doesn't pull any emotional punches.
