The Dead and the Gone is set in New York, USA and follows the Morales family who live in a basement apartment in the city. On the day the moon is hit, the father of the family is in Puerto Rico for a family funeral and the mother is working at a local hospital. Their eldest son Carlos is away with the US Marines. This leaves the three children alone to fend for themselves. They have trouble surviving, so the 2nd eldest sends the middle child to a convent. She comes back sick, so they have even more trouble as food becomes more scarce and temperatures drop, the middle child dies and the other two leave the city with a Sister of their school.
