“I actually finished this. Good read between classes or before bed.”

What I like about this collection, as well as The Best American Short Stories collection, are the comments the authors make about their stories in the back of the book. I get so excited to finish a story, then flip to the back of the book to read what an author says, or (usually) doesn't say about their story. There were at least four stories in this 2008 collection that blew my mind. A marriage disintegrates after the father nearly drowns his son in a boat accident, a woman investigates her local cemetery after discovering a lump on her breast, an HIV positive Ukrainian woman ponders marrying the man from Montana, and a surrogate mother uses her power over a desperate couple to her advantage. ”

I don't want the book to end and so slowed down my read of it. The variety of writers and their mastery of the short story form is notable. This book has been a great gift to this lover of literature and to my writing self. I highly recommend. ”
