In 119 AD, four thousand soldiers of the Roman Ninth Legion march into the wilds of northern Britain to quell a Caledonian uprising, never to be seen again. The honor of the Ninth Legion has been lost and cannot be restored until the legion's bronze eagle standard is returned to Rome. Fourteen years after his father disappeared with the bronze eagle, Marcus Flavius Aquila experiences 'the glory of his fist command' in the southwest Britain. His dreams of a military career are shattered, however, when he is wounded. Gradually, as he makes his recovery, Marcus realizes that this is his chance to solve the mystery of the lost legion.
