I liked this mystery that develops an interesting character in Reverend Claire Fergusson and her relationship with the police chief, Russ. A new character enters the series, Hadley KNox, a divorced mother of two, who joins the police force. Her character is also intriguing. THe novel ends with Fergusson going off to Iraq (she's also a member of the National Guard), Russ is recovering from almost mortal injuries and Knox and one of the other police officers are having an affair.

The aftermath of the death of Russ van Alstyne's wife is reflected in the state of his and Clare Fergusson's relationship, that continues to evlove strongly, and the community and department in general, in this installment of the series. He and Clare are both lost to each other and their daily lives, looking for redeption and fulfillment. Further the police department and others find themselves at great risk from the criminal element of the story. Overall this is one of Spencer-Fleming's best. I was happy to read the wit that seemed to missing in the last book, especially between Russ and Clare. I don't know how amenable the Church would actually be to a priest becoming a member of the National Guard, not in the position of a chaplain, but it does provide an element to Clare's life that is more believable given her penchant for becoming involved in police business and activities not wholly supported by the Church. I was also relieved to have the difficult and tense romance between Russ and Clare come to some fuition. Well-written and suspenseful the book was another very enjoyable read.

Miller’s Kill reaches the boiling point in this white-hot novel of love and suspense from award-winning author Julia Spencer-Fleming

    “Jaw-dropping.”—Chicago Tribune

In the small Adirondack town of Millers Kill, New York, life doesn’t stop for heartbreak. A brand-new officer in the police department, a breaking-and-entering, and trouble within his own family keep Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne busy enough to ignore the pain of losing his wife—and the woman he loves.

“SPENCER-FLEMING REMAINS A STAND-OUT IN THE MYSTERY WORLD.”

    —Chicago Sun Times

At St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, the Reverend Clare Fergusson is trying to keep everyone happy all the while denying her own wounded soul. When a Mexican farmhand stumbles over a Latino man killed with a single shot to the back of his head, Clare is sucked into the investigation. The discovery of two more bodies executed in the same way ignites fears that a serial killer is loose. Now two would-be lovers, who thought they had lost everything, must find a way to trust each other again—as the violence strikes ever closer to home...

Wow. I am loving this author and the two main characters. This time we have a timely mystery, some real passion, and great cliff hanger.

This is one heck of a book. My favorite in the series so far. The whole crime aspect wasn't as tight and interesting as some of the others, but it was fine. And I actually truly enjoyed reading the story from all the different perspectives. Knox and Fynn were my favorites. I admit I liked their story better even than Russ's and Clare's I wanted more desperately after I finished.

I'm sad that this is the (current, I hope) last book in this series. While I didn't like it as much as the 3rd and 5th books, it was a good read, especially at the end. I like how the relationship between Russ and Clare keeps developing.

I Shall Not Want got off to a slow start and I thought I wouldn’t be able to complete the book but I enjoy the characters Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne and Rev. Clare Fergusson so much I decided to stick with it and I’m glad I did. I waited a long time for I Shall Not Want because it’s a follow up to All Mortal Flesh which I thoroughly enjoyed. Three quarters through the book it started resembling Russ and Clare’s other adventures. I Shall Not Want is an all right read.
