The book takes place takes place in Finland during world war 1 when the red army invades his country.His dad just left to go fight. The main person is Marko and he is a junior nation gard.Also he has polio in is his leg but and bothers him when he walks. When him and his friend are walking home his friend is blown to peices by a bomb. When Marko was voluntering at the hospitol the commander askes to be a messenger in the front lines. Marko accepts his invitation. When Marko gets there he relizes how cold and how tired it is. Then when the red army attacked with tanks they relized that the U.S was giving them tankes,and waqs furius with this. Then they disscoverd that the Politruks was the only reason the red army is still fighting.
