Very enjoyable book--especially if you are familiar with Buffalo. I read this after the Day the Falls Stood Still--great combination.

One of the best reads of the year. If you enjoy historical fiction, this is a book for you. Set during the Buffalo World's Fair, it gives insight to the social constructions in place for women at the beginning of the 20th century.

This is exactly the sort of novel I love - historically based in fact, but with a host of characters and intriguing plot lines. I loved the main character, who was constrained by the social mores of the time. My only criticism of the novel was there were almost too many plot lines, some of which were believeable and some not (for example, the lesbian "terrorist".) However, it was immensely enjoyable and one had to completely pay attention to the story, so as not to get lost. A long read, but well worth persevering!

Alot of stuff going on in this book; murder, romance, electricity, presidential liaisions and on and on. The men behind the scenes were in power and unscrupulous. That element of human nature hasnt changed. I enjoyed reading about the city of Buffalo at its peak and wonder what happened.

I love this book! The main character is the head mistress of the Macauly school for girls in Buffalo and she tells her story in first person. It is historical fiction so some of the items are true. I love the fact that she walks up the same streets I did when I was a student at Buffalo State. I love that part of Buff and that is where the story takes place. Did you know that at the turn of the century 60 millionaires lived in buff and that is was the third wealthiest city in the US? Fascinatiing!!!!

Powerful novel set in turn-of-the-century Buffalo, New York. Really gives a picture of what life was like when electrical lighting was new and a whole world of scientific possibility was opening up before us. Makes clear that no matter how long ago or what else was going on, people have remained very much the same.

This is an intricate tale set in turn-of-the-century Buffalo featuring both fictional and true historical characters. It is slow-paced but builds to many surprises - and one event this reader found inevitable. Examines gender, race and class roles and the burgeoning development of industry and technology at this pivotal time in history.

This was a hard book to get into but once you did it was a very fast read. Descriptions were detailed. We really liked how the characters developed. The reader keeps getting surprised right to the very end.
