Although this was written at the very beginning of the PC age and much has happened in the past couple decades, this book was an eye opener for me on who we process information and the dangers of information overload. The author outlines how technology has changed the way we think and relate...

You must read this book -- made me look at televised "news, politics, religion, etc" in a totally different way.

A fascinating and intriguing book on the effect of television on culture and public discourse. Though written in 1985, developments today and the massive effect of the internet and social networks in the global age make Neil Postman's work all the more applicable.

One of my all-time favorites, I picked this book up at random and have never thought about TV or media the same since.

The author outlines how technology has changed the way we think and relate throughout history.

08/08: Hard read, but good... important. Some anti-Catholic remarks about printing press or media-savvy priests, but overall, good message.

Postman was concerned about what was happening to us as we spent more and more time in front of the TV. Now we have not only TV but a plethora of other media to consume our time and attention. Not only has public discourse suffered (how many investigative reporters are out of work in 2009? How many of us sit down with our families for dinner?) but now statistics show, in addition, that for every 2 hours daily in front of the TV we are 25% overweight and shorten our life expectancy thereby. This book is still cited rather frequently.

I read this book 20 years later than I should have. WOW! It nails it. This is a must read for anyone who is concerned about our culture.

Very eye-opening. Read it in college for a Humanities class and recently purchased the rereleased edition. Technology is killing us, or at least rotting our brains. Think, people!!!
