  • Martin the Warrior: Main character, a warrior mouse. Needs to get his Father's sword back from Badrang, who stole it from him as an infant; after his death Martin becomes the guiding spirit to many Redwall heroes.
  • Laterose or Rose: Pretty young mousemaid, saves Martin from vultures when he is tied to the top of Marshank after a storm. Teams up with Martin and Felldoh after saving her brother to free Marshank of slavery.
  • Pallum or Pallum the Peaceful: hedgehog
  • Grumm: mole, Rose's friend. Weapon: soup ladle. Loves to cook, especially soup.
  • Badrang the Tyrant: A stoat who rules the fortress Marshank. Killed by Martin the Warrior.
  • Ballaw: A jaunty hare. Is a member of the Rambling Rosehip Players
  • Tramun Clogg: A corsair pirate. He braids every piece of hair he can find. Used to be Badrang's partner. Now he is enemies with the stoat.
  • Rowanoak: A huge badger. Member of the Rambling Rosehip Players.
  • Felldoh: A very brave squirrel. He has been stuck in slavery since an infant, and is obsessed with defeating Badrang.
  • Druwp: A double-dealing slave-beast.
  • Brome: Rose's brother. Can't even think about killing another animal.
  • Polleekin: A kindly mole. Knows things and doesn't know how she knows them.
  • Barkjon: Felldoh's elderly father.
  • Gurrad: A very important captain of Badrang's.
  • Boldred: A huge owl. Very kind.
  • Luke: Martin's father. Went to war a long time ago and never came back.
