Mossflower tells the story of Martin the Warrior, who finds himself trespassing on the land of Verdauga Greeneyes as Verdauga lies sick and near death. With his last strength, Verdauga struggles to make a decision on who should replace him as ruler of Mossflower Woods. His daughter,Tsarmina has a fox healer named Fortunata give her brother Gingivere herbs to unwittingly poison Verdauga; when Verdauga dies her brother is framed. As Martin, Gonff, and Dinny the mole join together in a quest to Salamandastron, a fiery mountain ruled by the wise and noble badgers, a resistance against Tsarmina's rule starts to rebel and defy her rules. Join Martin and his fellow prisoner Gonff as they are embroiled in the battle against Verdauga's ruthless daughter, Tsarmina,where a bloody battle between good and evil ensues, resulting in the end of one side. The battle culminates to a final point in which one side's ruler dies.

  • Martin the Warrior: Warrior mouse from the Northernlands; helps found Redwall Abbey; friends with Gnoff; son of Luke the Warrior; says he doesn't remember much about his past, but he does; kills Tsarmina and ends the monarchy of Mossflower Woods
  • Gonff: A mousethief; has an unfailing sense of humor and light attitude (some say he is immature); a trouble maker; enjoys making up songs and dances while playing his wooden flute; an excellent mimic; Martin's companion; also known as "Prince of Mousethieves" or "Gonff the Mousethief"
  • Tsarmina Greeneyes: female wildcat and primary antagonist
  • Bella of Brockhall: A badger; daughter of Boar the Fighter. The mother of the group, she takes nothing from nobody. And defends those she cares about with ferocity.
  • Young Dinny: a wise young mole; destined to become Fore Mole
  • Old Dinny: a mole, Young Dinny's "granfer"
  • Abbess Germaine: old Abbess of Loamhedge; founder of Redwall Abbey and first Abess
  • Gingivere: a wildcat, son of Verdauga Greeneyes, brother of Tsarmina, and nephew of Ungatt Trunn; a kinder soul than his sister;
  • Lady Amber: Leader of the Squirrels
  • Mask: A tail-less otter who is a master of disguises
  • Verdauga Greeneyes: a wildcat lord of Kotior and all of Mossflower; father to Gingivere and Tsarmina; murdered by Tsarmina
  • Skipper: A large otter. Leader of the otters and Mask's brother.
  • Lord Cayvear: A huge bat, and leader of all the bats in Bat Mountpit.
  • Log-a-Log: A shrew, once leader of a shrew village, a ferryman.
  • Ashleg: A pine marten with one wooden leg. He is Verdauga then Tsarmina's second-in-command.
  • Ben Stickle: A kind hedgehog, father of Ferdy, Coggs, Spike, and Posy.
  • Goody Stickle: Ben Stickles wife, mother of Ferdy, Coggs, Spike, and Posy.
  • Boar the Fighter: Once ruler of Mossflower, he is a massive, war-like but kind badger. Father of Bella, and grandfather of Sunflash.
  • Sunflash: Bella and Barkstripe's son, he disappeared after the original resistance against the wildcat Kings rule.
  • Chibb: A slightly fat robin, he is a spy (not without pay, of course) for Corim.
  • Argulor: Argulor is a huge, old eagle that has bad eyesight and lives right outside of Kotir. He has never tasted pine marten.
  • Bane: Bane is leader of fifty to sixty mercenaries that join Tsarmina in her fight against the woodlanders.
  • The Gloomer: A huge, insane river rat that has lost his eyesight from spending so much time underwater. He lives at the underground lake in Kotir.
  • Trubbs, Wother, and Ffring.: Three hares that live in Salamandastron. They are always together, and speak in turns.
  • Fortunata: A healer fox, she is a Captain under Tsarmina.
  • Cludd: One of Tsarmina's captains.
