This isn't as masterfully written as Golden's memoir of a Geisha, but I think it should be overlooked, because this is about the ACTUAL life of an ACTUAL geisha. She leavs a bit of the more personal information out, but as a biography about someone who their core purpose requires one to be discrete, it isn't too surprising. If you like Geisha, or you enjoyed the wonderful book Memoirs of a Geisha, then I'd definitely pick this up. Also the pictures in it are wonderful, I wish there had been more. :(

MUCH better than Memoirs of a Geisha, this book is an actual biography instead of a fictional one. I felt like it was much more entertaining and informational because it was true.

An interesting perspective into a world unfamiliar to most Western minds. Beautiful.

Not a dramatically gripping story like Memoirs of a Geisha, but is it very interesting and a good glimpse into the life of a real life geisha. If you're interested in Japan or what things were like, it's definitely worth a read.

I have to admit that even though these are the true memoirs of a geisha and Arthur Golden's book is more towards fiction, I did personally enjoy his book a bit more. But it was interesting to read them both in order to make a comparison.

This is a very interesting true story of a geisha. Mineko describe the true life of a geisha and distinguishes what is fact and what is fiction. For example, Mineko clears up the misconception of the true meaning of "misuage" that Memoirs of Geisha was completely wrong with (the idea that the geisha must sale her virginity to the highest bidder was false. this was actually practised in the pleasure district not in the geisha world). It is a wonderful read about some of Japan's ancient traditions.
