This is Zakaria's perspective on the balance of power in today's world -- basically, that the U.S. is still the lone superpower and will be for a long time yet, but our "shine" has been tarnished and our leverage has diminished somewhat. We owe this slightly lesser status to the "rise of the...

interesting. could have been edited down a bit, but wasn't overwhelmingly long. i tended to think that - while perceptive point of view - it lacked depth. i think the author is associated with cnn, and this read as a cnn "in depth" piece.

(Borrowed from library but looking to purchase in near future). This was not an easy read for me, but I felt that I needed to read this book. I wanted an "outside looking in" perspective on America's place in the future and I think Mr. Zakaria hit right on target. It appears that the researched material in this book is well layed out and leads the reader to take a thought provoking journey. The journey down a road that is sure to lead the reader to believe that at the end of this journey America will be in a different economic and poliitical position then what it has been accustomed to in the past. Politically and economically America will not be found at the exculsive luxury like address that it has previously resided in over the years, but in the near future America will possibly be at an address that resembles a common residential neighborhood so to speak. Hopefully, this new neighborhood will have a few friendly, helpful neighbors and a good working neighborhood watch. Hopefully, it will NOT be on a bad side of town that no one will want to viist or do business in let alone reiside in. In essence, if America does not shape up it may find that it has moved from 'Rodeo Drive' to 'Main Street' to 'Wisteria Lane' to possibly 'Skid Row'.

A well-written look at opportunities for America in the 21st century. I found the book less politcal and more pratical then expected and provides plenty of reason for us to remain optimistic and not pessimistic about the future.

Puts things in perspective while explaining the changing dynamic of the global system. Some chapters were a little dry, others really interesting.

Don't let the title scare you. It's really about the next stage of globalization when the U.S.A isn't the sole influence on world markets and events.

Zakaria argues that in the post-American world, the U.S. is becoming less dominant as other "emerging" countries such as China, India and Brazil gain dominance through the growth of their economies, and become indifferent to the U.S.
