I've heard great things about this book. Does it live up to the buzz?

I didn't like it very much when I was reading it. It's written mostly in Spanglish, which I don't speak, so it was difficult to capture all the nuances. However, the style makes the characters come alive and gives them a unique voice and a distinct perspective. The ending was what really made the book come together for me. Looking back now, I enjoy the book. It's a fresh, humorous read if you're looking to be transported to another place/culture/viewpoint. I don't think it lives up to the Pulitzer buzz overall though.

It does not. I read the first three chapters, then cut to the chase and read the last one. Too urban for me; a middle aged white woman. I guess they give Pulitzers out for crap now.

This book is brilliant and merits all the accolades it has received. However, it really does help to speak Spanish to be able to capture Diaz's amazing artistry with language.
