Can someone explain why the thugs asked Oscar for the translation to fuego at the end?

I've only read a few chapters but he captures "living on the hypen" very well. some of the Spanglish phrases I don't get though.

The book has been in my apartment since 11/07 and I avoided reading it because I knew that Trujillo's murderous regime would be covered in the book. Last month, I decided to brave the Trujillo truth and dive into Oscar's world. It was worth it. The book lives up to the buzz and I loved how Diaz takes this overwhelming vast historical truth and distills it into the intimacy of one family.

I just finished this book. I do not think it lived up to all the buzz about it, but it was a good read. Fast, interesting and good develpment of characters. Author wrote with a sense of humor which kept story interesting and lighthearted at times.

Wow. What an amazing book. Though I speak very little Spanish and have only limited knowledge of the sci-fi/fantasy genre, I think Diaz did well to make no concessions in terms of the language and all the obscure references. That's partly why the writing is so mind-blowing original and fresh.

The father is mentioned on page 165. Oscar's mother met him on the plane to New York and they were married for two years.

I finished reading this book last night and it was worth the romp, the ride, the word play, the history, the spanish words and phrases that weren't translated (what's up with that?). This book was playful and sorrowful. Fuku - well, if you or your peeps have experienced it or witnessed it, you know what he's talking about. I recommend!

I'm a few chapters in and I've laughed a lot and learned a lot about Dominican history. Enjoying it.
He is a witty word smith and takes some liberties but I judge novels for whether or if they engage me. He does so far.
