According to the author’s portrait of her mother, she raised ten children on nothing more than good humor and a quick wit. She is the kind of clever, resourceful woman I unapologetically have very...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I liked Terry Ryan's story about her mother raising 10 children in the 1950's and 60's under great adversity - mostly the result of her alcoholic husband. There was a lot in this story that brought back my own memories of growing up at that time. Obviously Mrs. Ryan was an extremely bright woman who found a way, through entering contests, to divert herself from the humdrum of life as a homemaker and to provide her family with the things they needed (food, clothing, education, etc.) that they wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford. It wasn't great literature, but it was uplifting and entertaining. I'd like to see the movie.”

I don't doubt the events happened, though, as the "prize winner" was an extremely faithful woman who did the best she could with the talents she had.”

I liked how the author told where all 10 kids are at present. I liked how Evelyn didn't succumb to despair or depression through all her tribulations. There were parts that seemed vague but I think that is how Evelyn was. She kept to the moment and worked with determination and hope rather than lament the injustice.”

Really good read!”
