Sandra Brown writes a spine-tingling, twisting thriller. A detective responsible for solving the case of the killing of a supposed housebreaker is drawn into a dangerous game where he doesn't know who to trust beside his partner. The ups and downs in this story kept me reading through the end.

This is steamy suspense, and sharply crafted crime drama at it’s best! Sandra Brown is awesome! I literally could not put this books down, I didn’t want it to end. Elise is a character shrouded in mystery leaving the audience to wonder if she is a clever murderer or an damsel in distress. Duncan’s feelings for her and the sexual encounters make him come down harder on her than normal. There is even some mystery to Cale. Is he a loving, devoted husband, or a corrupt as they come? I would love to give this book 10 stars.

I recommended this to my son, a policeman. Great S.Brown mystery. Detective Sgt. Duncan Hatcher knows his job is on the line when he is called to the home of Judge Cato Laird in the middle of the night to investigate a fatal shooting. At first glance it seems open and shut. We all know it isnt. Terrific murder mystery.

Elise Laird is the young and beautiful wife of the much older and well respected Judge Cato Laird. Duncan Hatcher is the Savannah detective called to the scene of a fatal shooting at the Laird household. While it appears that Mrs. Laird has shot a burglar in self defense, Hatcher is not convinced that all is at it seems; and a connection to a crime lord who is his nemesis makes his doubts soar. Complicating matters is his attraction to Elise, an attraction that could be fatal.

Okay that’s the story in a nutshell, and familiar romantic suspense territory. In Brown’s capable hands what could be mundane and trite is instead a fairly well plotted murder mystery loaded with twists, turns and plenty of surprises. The characters of Duncan and his partner Dee Dee Bowen are well drawn and believable, the other characters are less well done. The use of amazing coincidences and some unbelievable love scenes takes away from some of the enjoyment, but not much, and the ending is truly edge of your seat.

Despite the rave reviews I have read for this one, I found it somewhat lacking. I couldn't really get into it and kept looking for something more. Not SB's best work.

A good thriller, though a bit too much of the romance novel thrown in for me.
