I loved this book even though it was so hard to have to sort of "live" through the heartache with Bella. I couldn't bear to see her getting so close to Jacob either, but the last couple of chapters more than make up for the first 2/3 of the book. I think it was very important to see the sacrifice that Edward was willing to make for Bella. Aaaaaahhh! I love Edward!! :-D

When I finished chapter three, I LITERALLY THREW THE BOOK OUT THE WINDOW!!!!!!! I swear! What's wrong with Edward???? More importantly, what's wrong with Bella???? Leaving an extremely hot vampire, for a DOG??????? Erg. I have to say, it was helpful. Even though it was torture to read Jacob this and Jacob that, this book gave a lot of helpful information.

i agree with brittany. this book is my absolute favorite because it goes deep into the emotions of loss and heartbreak. this book defines her love for edward and shows that the series is not merely fan fiction, gushy and lovey-dovey for the comfort of the reader but is an actual story complete with the sadness and heartache of life. i love this book so much because it delves into human nature and creates a framework for the image of bella's mind that no amount of declarations of love could do. it shows that she truly cares for him, not just his beauty or the potential for immortality. it also adds jake, who is personally my favorite character. he provides a support for her crumbling heart and distracts her from her pain, making her momentarily almost happy. he is a great friend to her when she needs it most and helps her through a menacing period in her life where she is hollow and brittle, ready to implode at the slightest provacation. this is the book, i believe, that really defines their love and makes it possible to continue the story in a deeper way.

At first this was my least favorite book of the series. It was just too depressing... But after reading it again, I felt myself being completely taken over by the raw emotion expressed.
A lot of people have trashed the book(s) because they feel Bella is too reliant on the men in her life. I don't think this is the case at all - first of all, she should be devastated by Edward's disappearance. How many of us have ever lost True Love, not just normal love? (If you have, then I'm sure you didn't bounce back like a beach ball.) And the void is filled by her friend Jacob - not because he is male, but because he is a true friend who accepts her as she is, hurt and all. Had any of the female characters been this type of friend, then perhaps Bella would have leaned on them instead...
