Made me want to see No Country, and gave me a little insight into the characters. McCarthy sits and the table and breaks bread with the primal nature of humanity in this one: Man's need to fight and what is actually at...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“i had to take a month long hiatus from this book before i was able to return to it...at some point i do plan on reading it again. ”

Its language is archaic. Its imagery is vivid. And McCarthy really delves into the darkest side of the old west, the side shrouded by John Wayne and Bonanza and Support Your Local Sheriff.”

The way he speaks and the way he looks at the world is certainly unique and when hold up against the world he lives in it actually makes some kind of sense at times. If there is hope to be found in this book it is buried in the small kindnesses and the friendships that are sometimes struck. It certainly shows men's capacity for evil. ”

Surreal Western circa 1969. McCarthy is in my opinion one of the greatest north-american writers of this century.”

The landscape descriptions are amazing. The characters are about as unrepentant and gritty as one could imagine the dark underside of the old west to be. To read this book is to be pursued by the vision of it. I'm not sure whether I loved it or was just fascinated by it. Totally morally ambiguous, Blood Meridian doesn't have any "John Ford" western moments. Mainly it's just a lawless band of Americans carving their way through Mexico and being slowly picked off by other, equally repugnant bands of humans. Mr. McCarthy is either a genius or very much in need of deep psychotherapy! I'll read it again before long because it's one of those books that are similar to car accidents....you don't really want to look again and again, but you really can't help yourself. ”

The settings are described with a wondrous asceticism and the action is around as brutal as you can bear, couple this with the fact that very little happens, then happens again and again and again etc and you have to wonder how it is you ever got through this novel as it's no easy feat. It is however a rewarding one, there is a certain beauty in its punishment that lends the novel a heightened sense of experience which more than makes up for any previous hardships.”

It follows all of the rules of Westerns, and it breaks all of the rules of Westerns. This is a dark, dark depiction of one of America's darkest moments. Blood and gore are juxtaposed into some of the most beautiful descriptions I have ever seen. If anything, Blood Meridian will make you smarter! ”
