I really did not care for this book but I could see them making a movie out of it. I felt the whole story was pointless. I suppose it is about the human desire to survive. I did not like it but would like to know what other people thought of it.

Actually, the movie is already filmed. It comes out in November, starring Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings) as the father. I loved it. I couldn't get over how McCarthy was able to put forth such a vivid image in so few words - i.e., the scene with the people locked in the 'pantry'. The desparation of the two, but the father's love and devotion to his son was palpable, even off the paper.

Hi Hilda. I thought the book was sad, depressing but at the same time inspiring and very touching. The aspect that affected me most was the father's patience and his overall relationship with his son in the face of such adversity and hopelessness. It was not easy to read but I felt it was well worth it. He didn't win a Pulitzer for nothing!

Hi Hilda! While I found the story to be disturbing and the "minds eye" to linger, I love this book because of the writing style. The world has come to the bare minimum and even when speaking to each other - the father and son use a minimum of words. It is such a gripping tale and a literary journey. It makes one question their desire to live. You can't hate the mother for her decision - what would you do if you were faced wth this situation - would you act with bravery and belief like the father, turn to a horrible pact mentality of survival at any cost like the "bad people", kill yourself or seek to find the goodness in others like the boy (think back to when they find Eli on the road). If you can get past the disturbing images that the book evokes, you will find a beautiful story.
