The Shelfari Reading Room 284 books / 202 members / 345 posts This group is for people of all ages who would like to exchange their reading experiences with others. Let's talk about our favorite books, what stories mean to us and why, and anything else that helps to describe our reading experiences.

I've added the link to a good online book club, Zooba, too... make a reading list and they'll send you the books
Audible Books to recommend 545 books / 274 members / 1210 posts I thought it would be nice to have a list of books that people have read that are on audible (downloads from Audible.com & library CDs are my choices). I've created quite a wish list, making sure that it is listing books that can be listened to -- otherwise, no point in thinking about it. We are so lucky to have such an incredible selection of books to listen to now -- it's a whole new world and just in 5 years! I used to read 3 books a year if I was lucky -- now it's more like 30 books now that I can listen -- I love it!!

When members write down the books they have read -- give at lease a two word critique, even if as simple as the star system -- it's more helpful to see that than the list of books one plans to read. Also, mentioning the book name in Comments allows the reader to see what you are referring to when reading from iPhone!
FrugalReader.com Members 480 books / 42 members / 229 posts A group for Shelfari.com members who are also FrugalReader.com members!

Apocalypse Lovers 190 books / 421 members / 805 posts O.K. I admit it, I love post-apocalyptic novels. Anything where society has been forever altered whether it is plague, nuclear weapons, aliens, meteors or Good vs. Evil doesn't matter, I just love a good tale where everything has been re-imagined. Come join me and discuss your favorite and not-so-favorite apocalypse novels

Brilliant Babes (And Dudes) Who Read Selectively 668 books / 174 members / 10378 posts October Spooky Duel Book Group Read: Dracula...Bram Stoker and Interview With the Vampire...Anne Rice

There are people who will read any book that comes out, and there are people who won't read anything that is less than 200 years old. The Brilliant Babes (and Dudes) are in-between--we often turn up our noses at certain writers, but we have a keen appreciation for high-quality brain candy as well! We are a friendly group mixed with a bit of sharp sarcasm, a sprinkling of green Enabler Dust and a TBR pile a mile high.

If you are slightly toward the snobbish side of the book-lover's spectrum--if you love your Dickens but also love your Nora--then you've come to the right place! Our group is invite-only to preserve the correct mix of people, but if you want to join, drop Suze, Rob or Dragonfly a note and we will review your shelf. If you get a friend invite, accept it and we will invite you to join us! (Please note that none of the admins spends all day, every day online. It may be a few days before we can get back to you. Suze and Dragonfly especially go MIA for various reasons, so please be patient and it will be rewarded!) Also, please do NOT ask for an invitation if you don't plan on regularly posting. It does take us time to review new members, and we love new members who participate, but the posts are visible to all Shelfari members who just want to lurk. :)

BBD Blog: http://brilliantbabes.blogspot.com -- chock full of BBD goodness!

Note for all members: In the past, we have had people confuse "slightly snobby" with "raging literary a-holes." Although we do appreciate a good crack on a bad author, please refrain from knowingly insulting your fellow BBDs. We love Shakespeare, but we hate drama!

BEA Lit Insiders 185 books / 522 members / 220 posts Welcome to the BookExpo America Lit Insider group on Shelfari!
What the hell is a BEA Lit Insider? Well, BEA is the 2nd largest book fair in the world and takes place every June. This year the show is in L.A. and I'd love tohear from any West Coasters that are interested in the show or are planning on going. By the way, I’m the director of BookExpo America and you can check out my blog and learn more about how books are “made” www.mediumatlarge.net

"WTF?" 142 books / 867 members / 2664 posts Ever started reading a book that everyone else seems to love and you just don't get the attraction? Or picked up a book from an author you usually love and wondered if the latest offering was written while talking on the phone? Or perhaps you read the first three chapters of a book and still can't figure out what's going on, who the characters are, the basic plot, or even the purpose of the book at all? What happens when all your friends recommended this great book that you thought was the most poorly written waste of perfectly good trees you ever read?

Welcome! You have found a place to vent your frustrations, discuss your opinions, review justifying arguments, or generally get satisfaction for time wasted on reading a book that just left you asking...WTF????
50 Book Challenge! 4720 books / 4694 members / 31205 posts Welcome to the 50-Book Challenge! We are not listless. In fact, we love lists ...

A list of the books we've been looking forward to, for example, can be found by following this link:

http://astore.amazon.com/allencotrip-20

Our challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

To join, all you need to do is start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books (with title and author, please.) Reviews are always welcome as well. It is a very good idea to bookmark your post (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites)for quick access for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

I enjoy reading your lists, and my TBR pile has grown as a result and I've read books I wouldn't have otherwise (The Hunger Games, I'm talking to you ...)

It doesn't have to be all lists all the time, though ... People enjoy it when you comment on their lists as well, so when you update your list ... take a minute and browse around. You never know what you might find. (Water For Elephants, I'm talking to you.)

"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.", Mortimer Adler

*This is a group for book lovers who prefer to take an under-promise and over-deliver approach to their reading. It's also for those of us who quake at the thought of "committing" to read 50 books in a twelve month period.

The challenge: Set a goal for yourself to read and enjoy 2 books each month.(If 1 would be a s-t-r-e-t-c-h goal for you, that's great too! If you crave more than 2, go for it. It's your challenge :-)

If you have been keeping track of all that you've read since January 2008, feel free to include those books towards your goal. If you haven't been keeping track, simply begin now.

How it works: Put your name in the subject line of a new post, and start to add your book list. From that point on you can add to your list by replying to the first post in your thread. If you prefer to keep your thread free of others' questions or comments then you may want to include this request in your original post title (e.g. "No comments please"). If you would like questions or comments within your thread, why not include "Comments welcome" in the title? If you feel inspired to write mini-reviews or comments on any book in your list, please do. Whatever feels right for you!

The group shelf:You are also invited to add your 24 + books to the group shelf. If you did write a comment or review please also add this to your book on the shelf. In an effort to keep things simple, we're only using the "Books We've Read" shelf.

Please drop us a note if you have any questions or suggestions for improving the group. We'd love to hear from you!

AP Literature 35 books / 16 members / 4 posts
Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics 1698 books / 2049 members / 2587 posts I am personally addicted to fantasy and sci-fi and I created this group for people to discuss Fantasy and Sci-fi books that they have read.

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a great way to discuss likes and dislikes about these books.

Just a warning, I will also put realistic-fiction books on the group shelf if I feel that they are as good as a fantasy or sci-fi book. MEOW!!!!!

***NOTICE***
If you are a member, or just a random person, please put any sci-fi or fantasy book that you *LOVE* on the group shelf, please!

Another thing, plez post discussions or reply to one, i'd love to hear your opinions.

Eagles Cogitating 15 books / 2 members / 3 posts This a group for Mr. Nesbitt's AP English III classes to convene and discuss things we read in class.

A few instructions and reminders (copied from others who have done this sort of thing before):

1) Good English reigns here, too. Write in complete sentences and DO NOT use "internet shorthand". What you do on your own pages is your business, of course, but any discussion thread on this site needs to be standard English.

2) I will add books we are reading together as a class to the Group Shelf. Any book you'd like to add to the shelf (or are adding as a part of an assignment) needs to be of AP quality. If you're not sure whether or not it is, ask me. Remember, on your Shelfari page, you can put whatever you like.

3) Remember that there is a Shelfari widget in Facebook. Also remember that our school computers are currently set to block Facebook.

4) Politeness is mandatory. Show respect for all the opinions posted here even if they differ greatly from your own. No profanity or vulgarity is allowed.

5) Posts need to be meaningful. "Me, too", "I hated it", "I loved it", and so forth as the sole body of a post do not a meaningful post make.....

Late Night Bookies 60 books / 78 members / 335 posts The Late Night Bookies is the book club that Optic Junkie and I started up about three years ago. We are located in the Rocky Mountain West in the United States--hot summers and bitter winters...but beautiful mountains and forests and wonderful people!

We called ourselves the Late Night Bookies--because we're pretty much late night people who love to read, our book clubs always go late, late into the evening...(read early morning hours)...and sometimes...if we start reading, we just can't stop until we've reached the end.

We've read a lot of books--had some book swaps, eaten some great food and had some good laughs along the way.

I wanted to share the books that we have read, as well as open up to discussion recommended books for future reading and ideas/recipes for continuing to enhance our book club experience.

I hope you enjoy the visit!

Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say 33 books / 11 members / 15 posts The first Nuestra Palabra showcase was held in April of 1998 in the party hall of Chapultepec Restaurant. Last year, we attracted over 30,000 people to our 2004 Third Annual Houston Latino Book and Family Festival, which takes place in the Fall. This is now the largest book fair in all of Texas. In only six years, we have gone from the party hall of Chapultepec Restaurant, to exhibit Hall A of The George R. Brown Convention Center. And we are still growing. Nuestra Palabra takes the upper echelon of Latino literature into the deepest part of the community. Our endeavors stem from our main showcases, which take place monthly from February to July. The showcases highlight Latino writers in an entertaining and informative forum. We generally draw from 100 – 300 people per event. These showcases are more than simply readings. Each forum evolves from or leads to other ways to educate and inspire the community, and at the same time promotes Latino literature and Latino authors. In 2000 we added the NP TV show which now broadcasts on Houston Community College Television on Channel 19 of the Warner system. The TV Show is currently in hiatus as we update the format. In 2001 we added the Nuestra Palabra radio show, “Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say: On The Air” every Tuesday night at 7:30 P.M. on 90.1 FM KPFT, nation-wide on www.kpft.org. In 2002, Nuestra Palabra brought the Edward James Olmos Latino Book and Family Festival to Houston, which has become an annual event. Houston has been the most successful city on the book fair’s circuit of 6 cities. And we are still growing!

Be sure to use your real name in your note so that I know who you are and will invite you to join!

Then, get going adding books to your own bookshelf, and putting them on the group shelf too. Adding a review lets us know what you thought of the book. You can do this in a discussion post too - and ask others for recommendations.

All school rules apply. Please don't use your real name, and do not post a photo of yourself. Of course, any inappropriate conduct and/or language won't be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action. Please write responses that follow the conventions of standard written English!

Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read 1626 books / 1957 members / 28564 posts Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read
Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, Marquez, Morrison, Joyce, Faulkner, Cather, Kingsolver and a few hundred other really delicious writers, not to impress strangers, but because they love a good read, then please join us.

We are not a private group, but the administrators will not resist the urge to delete boring and stupid comments. By the same token, personal attacks on young, slow or otherwise disadvantaged players will not be tolerated.

Generally, be nice to other members, but spare not public figures, pop lit superstars, big box stores, politicians and religious leaders. Focus more energy on what is good and even what is great, but feel free to throw a stone when the occasion calls for it.

To steal a phrase: we want to have serious intellectual discussions, but at the same time we want the heat to generate light, not fire....

What is BookMooch? from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BookMooch
BookMooch is an international, on-line book exchange community founded by John Buckman in July 2006. Membership is open to anyone and is free. BookMooch allows its users to exchange books using a points system. Members earn points by adding books to their inventories, by sending books to other members, and by providing feedback when they receive books. The points earned can then be used to “mooch” books from other members. All books “cost” the same number of points, with a multiple point surcharge for international mooches. Members may opt to send books only within their own country, worldwide, or worldwide upon request.

This is not meant to be a pompous group, but rather a group that appreciates the artwork on the original cover, or a good hard-bound edition that's been around for many years and, with good care, will be around for many more.
So join this group and add any nice editions that you have to the group shelf and we'll talk collecting.

RULES:

NO religious debates. Take that up in a forum that is designed for religious debates. Refer to only your religious beliefs in that they help form your opinion. Do not speak of the tenants of a faith that is not yours.

NO personal attacks. Do not use a member's name or any pronouns referring to a member with ANY derogatory comment. Do not use any descriptions that demean a person's character, intelligence or belief's.
NO direct advertising.
NO woman-bashing, as this does not promote the goal of up-building men.

Do censor your own comments prior to submission to ensure that they are respectful of the other members in the group.

Do pause before submitting in a heated discussion and take a second look at what you are about to submit.

Recommendations:
Be specific and don't use generalizations. When debating, be sure to counter specific points made and address the member who made the point.

Give people the benefit of doubt. This is the Internet therefore you don't have the vantage point of reading body language.

Ask for clarification. Ask questions. We could avoid a lot of hurt feelings if we first ask if a person is saying what we think they are saying.

State your position without expectation. The goal is to be heard and share your position. We're not here to win converts.

If you do feel attacked, address the offender directly and let them know that what they said (and be specific)hurt, upset, or concerned you. And communicate this without countering with an insult. It's hard to listen when you're feeling attacked.

When stating statistics provide the cite (web link, article, book).
Do title your discussion topic so that it spans all religions, and cultures and will spur interest.
