I thought this book was beautifully sad. It made me cry more than once. Its a story of struggle and a fathers struggle to take care of his little boy in a time of despiration.

This has got to be the worst book I ever read ... Why on Earth do so many books about the future have to be so desolate .. If you are even slightly 'under the weather' do not touch this book.

From the "Book Detail page" description:
    "Ridiculously Simplified Synopsis
    - A Father, his son, Love, Life, Death, Beauty and Eternal Mystery amidst the remains of apocalypse."
Ok.... So where is the "Eternal Mystery"? I missed that page.

I really liked this book, but somehow I couldn't quite get into it (and therefore get as much out of it) as I think I could have

I think part of this was that I couldn't get over the fact that the situation seemed so unrealistic -- there's NOTHING growing, and it's been years since whatever destroyed the environment (the boy has to be at LEAST 5 years old). I don't even think nuclear bombs have that kind of destructive power!

The other thing that I think may have taken me out of the book's mood was that I read it while riding in the car with my dad on the way to a camping trip, and I couldn't allow the dark mood of the book to really affect me because I was in such a beautiful and happy place myself.

Was I the only one that was kind of turned off by how the father robbed the thief? It just seemed so out of character for him in my opinion. It's the only reason I would give this book a 9.5 out of 10.

When the father talked about carrying the light do you think that he was making a religious reference? Did the father think that he or his son was a prophet?

The ending was actually far more hopeful than I was expecting. a lot of possibilities were going through my head as to what it would be, and what I was preparing for didn't quite happen. (can't really say more without giving the ending away...)

A bit different in its writing style from other works of popular fiction, but surprisingly profound. It shows the reader the importance of the relationship between the father and his son and the evil that humans are capable of (murder, torture, rape, stealing, etc.) but also how we're capable of unconditional love even in the absolute worst of circumstances - even at the end of civilization and the world as we know it.
