By addressing a spiritual dimension of existence, Coehlo breathes fresh life into a rather cliched plot of how love transforms people as they mature into their true selves, resurrecting an oft-tread plot by running an obvious parallel between the characters of this book and their Biblical counterparts. As always, Coehlo's naive prose and direct preachiness create a sense of folklore, as if it were being handed to us orally, but this book is also one of his first in rendering heavy situations...
