Grace R edited the themes of A Father's Law (P.S.) Tuesday, February 8, 2011.
- Added a theme: Racism: Throughout the novel, Ruddy talks about all he has had to overcome because of his race. The book takes place in a time when Black citizens were still considered second class. Oftentimes they were not able to find a good job to support their families because of racial discrimination. Those that wanted to become higher class citizens had to work incredibly hard to acheive their goals. It was actually quite uncommon in this time period for a Black man like Ruddy to become a police chief. He talks about all he had to overcome and all the hard work he put into his career in order to reach a higher standard of living. This is one of the main themes in the book.
- marked the description of Racism as not a spoiler
