I got to hear Pico Iyer speak a few weeks ago at Benaroya Hall as part of the Arts & Lecture Series. He was entertaining and very well-spoken; quite erudite, but accessible. He talked a lot about travel and his genre of writing, travel writing; his views of travel resonated with me. We travel to see new lands, yes, but really we travel to understand ourselves in new ways and experience new things that add to our understanding of ourselves, our world, and our place in it. It was an original paper that he wrote for this lecture series, so I hope it will be published somehow or somewhere. It was really entertaining and brilliant. I'm just a few chapters into the book and already I've marked many pages. I particularly like the parts about how to view hardship and create/choose happiness and sadness in our lives.
