He was entertaining and very well-spoken; quite erudite, but accessible. He talked a lot about travel and his genre of writing, travel writing; his views of travel resonated with me. “This book is for those who dont need an introduction to the Dalai Lama and his cause.”

I felt I got to know the Dalai Lama quite well in this book, and the job he does in spreading the word about Tibet as well as Buddhism. I did get annoyed with the author at several points in the book where his writing verred off into pointless speculation about such things as 'celebrity' and 'media' and also at times wondering if the Dalai Lama was naive in his handling of relations with China's leaders which seemed provocative. The book does point out how much Tibetans implicitly trust the Dalai Lama to lead them which shows how devoted they are to this man.”

I didn't like this biography of the Dalai Lama as much as The Wisdom of Forgiveness by Victor Chan. However, it was pretty good, and gives a lot of insight into what it really means to be Buddhist, and a political leader at the same time.”

It is a gem of a book, with pearls of wisdom strewn all over its 250 odd pages. More than a travelogue, it captures the journey of the exiied Dalai Lama and his beloved people. The author's lifelong assocuiation with the spiritual emissary is the subject matter of the book, but more than that the ethical issues are dealt with evocatively. Consider such imageries ; "Life is a joyful participation in a world of sorrows" or "To give up one's concept of being good is the only door to the universe's deeper reaches " is used while describing Tantra , an aspect of Buddhism. An elightening book”

I found myself sucked into it from the very beginning and I loved it the entire way through. I just hope that I can practice some of the lessons I've learned.”

He talked a lot about travel and his genre of writing, travel writing; his views of travel resonated with me. We travel to see new lands, yes, but really we travel to understand ourselves in new ways and experience new things that add to our understanding of ourselves, our world, and our place in it. It was an original paper that he wrote for this lecture series, so I hope it will be published somehow or somewhere. It was really entertaining and brilliant. I'm just a few chapters into the book and already I've marked many pages. I particularly like the parts about how to view hardship and create/choose happiness and sadness in our lives.”

His reflections on the Tibetan diaspora, his long intimacy with the present Dalai Lama, and his subtle but clear eyed writing style add to the inherent drama of the story he tells. ”
