    Introduction:

'Disruptive technologies are the greatest threat to the powerful who have traditionally controlled the means of publication.' (p5)

Not that our children have a voice and can assemble in masses through powerful technology tools, the tradition of teacher in control is shifting.

Scott McNealy's 10 reasons for not handing in homework will certainly bring on a smile:
    http://www.sun.com/aboutsun/executives/mcnealy/myvoice.jsp

Top 10 Excuses for Not Turning in Homework
    10. Tech support for my PC was offshored
    9. Had to delete it to make room for iTunes
    8. Still hand-writing it, productivity suite license too expensive
    7. I emailed it... didn’t you get it?
    6. Couldn’t afford HP ink cartridge
    5. T%k t% lng 2 QWERTY – txt 2 U instead? Translation: "Took too long to type on regular keyboard, can I text it to you instead?"
    4. "Cut and Paste" keys were worn out
    3. Plan on "open sourcing" from kid next to me
    2. Busy writing the "I Love You Too" virus
    1. The dog chewed-up my laptop

An interesting quote by Miguel Guhlin:

‘Social networking tools like MySpace (or Facebook and Bebo) and YouTube grant freedom of speech and assembly to the masses in a way that the American Revolution never could. For this reason, disruptive technologies are the greatest threat to the powerful who have traditionally controlled the means of publication…and that includes our schools.’ (ISTE 2007: 5)

How very true that newspapers now give the latest news online as they were finding the public were publishing the news before they could. Schools on the other hand like to keep things that are by published bodies and controlled by the teachers. A shift is happening where children are becoming the publishers due to the tools that enable freedom of speech.

    Connection:
‘Web 2.0 signals a transition from isolation to interconnectedness…these tools allow multiple users to participate: editing, commenting, and publishing a document collaboratively rather than working alone.’ (13)

Why should children work in isolation or why should we pretend that collaboration is happening when only one scriber for the group or four around one machine and only one mouse and keyboard!!! There are tools out there to enable true collaboration..

‘Web 2.0 changes the nature of the Web from distributed to participatory. People control the tools of production and publication and use them to collaborate…Downes says: it is not a technological revolution; it is a social revolution.’ (ISTE 2007: 46)

Yes we all talk about the technology but lets start talking about the socialisation. The technology is only a tool used a variety of different ways for different end products it is the socialisation that it is enabling. No longer do we need to be in the same location as we are always in the same virtual location through the technology.

This book is great for teachers, students, or anyone who wants to get a better understanding of how to use new internet tools in schools. Blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, and many other tools are described so that even people who have never heard of them can get an understanding of what they are. There are suggestions and strategies for teachers too!
