Cindy is a 15-year old, with a stepmother and two stepsisters who are incredibly superficial. With the prom coming soon, her entire school is obsessed with that alone. Cindy takes a stand against the prom and writes a letter to the school newspaper about it, and if she wasn’t enough of an outcast before, she is then… But, she has two best friends, the hippie-like, India, and the gay Malcolm to help her through it all, as well as her online friend BklynBoy.

This was just really fun and funny teen chick lit, if there’s such a thing! I loved it! It’s another one that made me feel like a teenager again, going through all the teenage angst that Cindy went through. I loved Malcolm and India. Loved the ending, too!!

Cindy’s tired of hearing about the prom everywhere she goes. She’s so tired of it that she writes a letter to the editor of the school newspaper bashing the prom. She targets the superficial traditions of the search for the right dress, the best shoes, and the popularity contests of the king and queen.

Instead, she wishes that people would obsess over real world problems. Unfortunately, she’s about the only one who feels this way -- and now the whole school’s decided that she really is a freak.

Besides her two best friends (who ARE going to the prom), three people back up Cindy in her ideals. Her father is impressed with her letter, her gay SAT tutor admires her guts, and the boy she IMs thinks she’s got the right idea. In fact, he turns out to be the uber-popular Adam Silver, who would rather take Cindy out on a date during prom night, but never to the prom.

This modern fairy tale takes the ball out of the equation, but still shows that the prince can fall for the princess and that they can have fun on their own terms.

At first I didn't really like this book because I disliked the main character, Cindy Ella. She's very self-righteous and has some hypocritical ideas about things. She's a feminist who is anti-prom. Not anti-prom as in she just wouldn't attend the Prom, but she thinks the Prom should be protested. I thought it seemed a bit silly for someone who is so caught up in wanting to put an end to the Prom because of how much focus society puts on the Prom and the perfect date, perfect dress, perfect shoes, etc., yet one of her favorite shows is My Super Sweet 16. Which, if you haven't seen the show, is a real life show about super rich 16 year old girls who have bratty attitudes and throw major tantrums if their parents don't give them everything they want for their Super Sweet 16th Birthday Party. How do you hate the Prom, but love this show? At one point in the book one of Cindy's classmates says that Cindy is lazy since she doesn't participate in any after school activities, and as a result hates the Prom because of it. I'm not really sure how those two things are connected, but Cindy does seem to dislike a lot of things about her school without trying them or trying to change them. She dislikes the school newspaper, but has big dreams of becoming a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Writing for the newspaper would be a step in the right direction of being a writer. Plus, if you dislike the school newspaper, being a staff member might help you to change the focus of the paper.

Once I got past some of Cindy Ella's hypocritical logic of things I did really like the book. Her two best friends, Malcom and India, are really entertaining. Her step-mother and step-sisters aren't the evil women as they usually are in Cinderalla retellings. Instead they are women caught up in the L.A. lifestyle of fashion, name-dropping, and being into themselves, but deep down, seem to have a really good heart. I liked seeing that change in the step-mother and step-sisters.

I also really liked the twist in the Fairy Godmother part of the story. I won't mention that since it's not until later in the book that we find out who her "Fairy Godmother" is, but it's certainly not your usual image of a Fairy Godmother!

I thought it was a really good book.
    But it was pretty dry.

I have heard the cinderella story before, basically all of america has. She has two step sisters and a horrible mom. In the end she gets the guy it is a very repeated story and there isn't much suspense.

Someone told me a story isn't about the ending its about how you get there.
Well in this story i knew the ending and the story about how they got there.
