  • Pika / Lass: The "nameless" heroine of the story. She can talk to animals.
  • Jarl Oskarson: The pika's father. Very loving and disappointed that his wife would not give his youngest a name. He is also fearful of trolls and sets out milk, butter, cheese, honey, and bread for them as a an offering in a way.
  • Mistress Frida: The pika's mother. She only wanted sons (she has 5 sons and 4 daughters) and when her last child came along (the pika/Lass) she refused to name it. Only the mother can name a baby in this world so the baby was left unchristened which makes her more vulnerable for the trolls.
  • Hans Peter Jarlson: The pika's beloved older brother. Used to be the very handsome. Hans Peter is a very good carver. Went on a huge sea trip and came back very weary and injured in a way. He loves his sister the Lass/ Pika the most.
  • Askeladden (Askel): The pika's not-so-good brother. The third 'lucky' brother. The ash son. Finds his fortune by killing a white bear.
  • Isbjorn (Ice Bear): Ice bear that the Lass lives with
  • Rollo: He is a wolf. Comes and helps Pikas stay in the Troll Palace. Loyal dog . Pika and Rollo talk all the time.
  • Tova: Former servant at the Palace. Becomes Pika's friend.
  • Erasmus: A faun servant at the isbjorn's palace
  • Mrs. Grey: A gargoyle servant at the isbjorn's palace as a maid.
  • Fiona: A selkie servant at the isbjorn's palace. Forbidden to speak.

  • Rolf Simonson: Gave the pika a wolf pup that she named Rollo in his honor.

  • ON: Most of the names and words used are Norwegian, but some are Old Norse (ON), the root of Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish.
  • Banahogg: ON, literally "death blow" the name of a troll.
  • Bunad: A traditional woman's outfit, consisting of a white blouse worn under a dark wool skirt and vest. The hem of the skirt and the edges of the vest are heavily embroided in red, blue and yellow. The vest fits thightly, the skirt is bell shaped.
  • Edda: The ancient poetry of Scandinavia, most eddas are sagas, meaning that they tell a story, whether tragic, comic, or romantic.
