Heartwrenching as well as heartwarming. I love the development of the relationship between brother and sister.

Wow, I hated this book. At several points, I had to re-read entire chapters, convinced that I had inadvertently skipped an important scene that would have made the improbable plot twists make sense. How, where, and when did 15-year-old runaway Lutie get the information about her father’s final whereabouts? That scene never appears in the book, although a chapter ends with Lutie’s dramatic announcement to her brother, Fate. Why does Juan, the mysterious stranger who helps Lutie and Fate, speak ridiculously broken English? His sister – who, like Juan, returned to her father in the United States after living with her mother in Mexico – speaks flawlessly. And why is Fate so relieved that his friend Johnny hasn’t recognized Lutie’s photo when Lutie doesn’t even arrive at Johnny’s house until several paragraphs after Fate claims the meeting went without incident? Although the characters were well drawn – especially Lutie and Fate – I had to force myself to finish this sloppy mess, hoping it would redeem itself at some point. That point never came.

Pretty good book, but not as good as Billie Letts other novels.

Could be disturbing in parts and had what I felt was a quick ending. I did like it which is rare because I usually dont like a book if I dont like the main character and she is definatly not easy to like. I like Billie Letts writing and find it easy to envision her setting, people.

This book is typical Billie Letts with her usual untypical characters and situations. In this novel, like her other novels, we see people from different backgrounds helping each other survive in what is often an unfriendly world. Fifteen year old Lutie and her younger brother Fate travel to Las Vegas to find their father, hoping he will take care of them. Instead, they discover that he has recently died in prison which means they must either become part of the foster care system or survive on their own.
As we read this novel, we see the deep love the two children have for each other, the strong determination they have to survive on their own, and the unselfish kindness good men and women offer them in their struggle. Yes, there are mean people in this world, but there are also many people who are basically kind as Billie Letts shows us as we read Made in the USA.

This is the first Billie Letts book I've read. I heard she was a good author so I decided to give her a try. I have to say that the book immediately kept my attention because there was so much happening from the start. But towards the middle, I began losing interest. I felt that the story was too long, and finally after all the hardships faced by the main characters, there is a happy ending. A bit predictable and at times, it just seemed very unbellievable.

Didn't live up to my expectations. Shoot the Moon was a much better read.
